Andy Barnes retired from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in May 2023 with over 30 years’ service, at the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent. His final post was Head of Intelligence, responsible for 2000 specialist officers and staff delivering intelligence services across London.
During his career, Andy has worked within the most sensitive national security environments, working with Government and multi-agency partners to manage high levels of national and international risk. Andy has worked extensively with partners across the world, leading on responses to high-risk situations, delivering significant interventions to prevent loss of life.
Andy has extensive strategic leadership experience, both in managing responses to major incidents, and in security management of the highest profile public events in recent years, including Operation London Bridge and the King’s Coronation.
Andy has led significant transformational change management projects to redefine and reshape business functions to reduce risk exposure and drive performance. Andy has experience in leading senior teams to redefine or re-assert organisational values, and to create structures around people strategy, risk management, business continuity and emergency planning, and data management, amongst other areas.
Since retiring from the MPS Andy is now supporting a number of large UK-based organisations at executive level, as well as foreign police and security agencies.
Andy has a Master of Science degree (with distinction) in Leadership and Management from the Warwick Business School, University of Warwick.
